Curator's Recital:
When art was first termed as feminist, it implied the expression of a woman's experience. There was a revelation of identity and writers and artists, who had been working under pseudonyms, were given recognition of their real identity. In 1985, the Guerrilla Girls decided to reinvent the "F word - feminism" by masking personalities and breaking all serious and stereotypical notions held in relation with feminism.
While women artists address global issues, there is a reflection and insight into something more personal. In an Indian society, which has a sensitive but powerful history of gender inequality, women voice their thoughts in various way; one of the most expressive and visual approaches being art.
This exhibition is an insight into the consciousness of six women artists of Indian origin - each one reciting through their art - a very personal, but global and feminine concern. Each recital - a journey of the self in a globalised context - is deeply rooted in personal history to create individual feminine aesthetics.
